U.S President Trump touts Greenland oil riches, strategic location

October 14, 2026 (MLN): US President Donald Trump has indicated that large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is about to begin in Greenland, claiming the Arctic island holds some of the world’s largest easily accessible oil reserves at a time when global energy prices remain elevated.

In a Truth Social post, President Trump referred to Greenland as our new and beautiful territory and suggested that some experts rank its reserves among the biggest and most accessible anywhere.

The post comes more than seven months into the war in Iran, which has kept energy prices high.

President Trump also stressed the island’s strategic value, arguing that any future attack on the US would have to pass over Greenland, where American defences would be positioned to intercept drones, missiles and even weapons not yet devised.

He said the location offered a combination of time, position and sightline that no other place in the world could match.

His remarks follow a September agreement between Washington, Denmark and Greenland to expand the US military footprint on the island, including more bases and missile defence capabilities, APP reported.

Despite President Trump’s wording, Greenland remains a self-governing territory within Denmark, and the agreement recognises Danish sovereignty and the right of Greenlanders to determine their own future.

Greenland stopped issuing new oil and gas exploration licences in 2021 on environmental and climate grounds, though licences granted earlier remain valid.
