April 08, 2026 (MLN): In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Pakistan has played a pivotal role in facilitating an immediate ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inviting delegations from both nations to Islamabad for high-level peace negotiations.
Taking to the social media platform X, the premier declared
that both countries, along with their respective allies, had agreed to halt
hostilities with immediate effect. The ceasefire extends across multiple
regions, including Lebanon and other affected areas.
“With utmost humility, I am pleased to share that the
Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America have agreed to an
immediate and comprehensive ceasefire,” the prime minister stated, describing
the move as a crucial step toward restoring regional stability.
Building on this development, Prime Minister Shehbaz
formally invited both sides to participate in what he termed the “Islamabad
Talks,” scheduled for April 10, 2026.
The objective of these discussions will be to reach a
lasting and conclusive agreement addressing all outstanding disputes between
the two sides.
He praised the leadership of both nations for demonstrating
restraint and wisdom during a period of heightened tensions.
“Their constructive engagement shows a shared commitment to
peace and stability,” he noted, expressing optimism that the upcoming talks
could yield sustainable outcomes.
Earlier, Donald Trump had declared a temporary suspension of
military action against Iran. In a statement shared on his platform Truth
Social, Trump confirmed a two-week pause in planned strikes, describing it as a
reciprocal step contingent upon diplomatic progress.
According to his statement, the decision followed direct
discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s military
leadership, including Asim Munir.
The pause in hostilities is also linked to Iran’s agreement
to ensure the safe and uninterrupted opening of the strategically vital Strait
of Hormuz.
Pakistan had urged a diplomatic window of two weeks to allow
dialogue to take precedence over conflict. The proposed opening of the Strait
of Hormuz during this period is being viewed as a confidence-building measure
aimed at easing global concerns over energy supply disruptions.
The development marks a notable moment in Pakistan’s
diplomatic engagement, positioning Islamabad as a key mediator in de-escalating
tensions between two major geopolitical rivals.
