U.S. House delivers fresh setback to Trump over Iran war

June 04, 2026 (MLN): U.S. President Donald Trump suffered another congressional rebuke as the Republican-led House passed a resolution aimed at curbing his authority to continue military operations against Iran, with four members of his own party breaking ranks in a 215-208 vote.

Representatives Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Massie of Kentucky crossed the aisle to support the measure, marking the first successful passage of a war powers resolution in the House after three previous attempts failed by increasingly narrow margins.

No Democrats voted against it, though seven members abstained, according to CNBC.

The resolution carries limited immediate effect. For it to become law, it would need to clear the Senate  where a similar measure advanced in a procedural vote last month after seven failed attempts  and then survive an almost certain presidential veto, requiring two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override.

The outcome nonetheless signals mounting unease within Republican ranks over President Trump's handling of a conflict now entering its fourth month with no end in sight, and represents a rare bipartisan effort to curb executive war-making authority.

This also had an effect on oil prices which edged lower below $97 per barrel.
