U.S. Democrats sweep major elections, scoring key wins in multiple states

November 05, 2025 (MLN):  U.S. Democrats made a clean sweep in several of the nation’s most closely watched elections on Tuesday night, securing major victories in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, California, and Pennsylvania.

In a historic win, Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim and self-described democratic socialist, is to become the next mayor of New York City, CNBC reported.

In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill is set to become the next governor, while in Virginia, Abigail Spanberger will make history as the state’s first female governor.

Democrat Jay Jones is also projected to unseat Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares.

Elsewhere, California voters approved Proposition 50, a constitutional amendment allowing the state to adopt a new congressional map that favors Democrats.

In Pennsylvania, voters re-elected three Democratic justices to the state Supreme Court, preserving the party’s 5–2 majority.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the results “a repudiation of the Trump agenda,” celebrating what he described as a clear rejection of “MAGA radicalism.”

“The cruelty, chaos, and greed that define MAGA politics were firmly rejected by the American people,” he said.

President Donald Trump, in contrast, blamed Republicans’ losses on his absence from the ballot and the ongoing federal government shutdown that began October 1.
