Trump halts Iran attack, eyes peace deal

April 08, 2026 (MLN): Donald Trump has postponed a planned military strike on Iran for two weeks, showing a potential diplomatic breakthrough as negotiations over a broader ceasefire gather pace.
The delay comes as talks between the United States and Iran
moved closer to a deal that could de-escalate tensions across the region. The
proposed understanding includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and advancing
discussions on a long-term peace framework.
Trump’s decision to hold off on attacks targeting Iranian
infrastructure marks a significant pause in hostilities, with showing that a
10-point proposal from Tehran is being considered as a workable basis for
negotiations, according to Bloomberg.
The temporary halt in military action is being viewed as a
critical window for diplomacy, although uncertainties remain regarding the
durability of any ceasefire and the final contours of a broader agreement.
Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that Pakistan has
stepped in to facilitate dialogue, inviting delegations from both Iran and the
United States to Islamabad for further negotiations aimed at reaching a
conclusive settlement.
On his social media, Shehbaz Sharif said:
“With the greatest humility, I am pleased to announce that the Islamic
Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies,
have agreed to an immediate ceasefire… I invite their delegations to Islamabad…
to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes.”
He added that both sides had shown “remarkable wisdom and
understanding” and expressed hope that what he termed the “Islamabad Talks”
would lead to sustainable peace.
Separately, Trump elaborated on his decision in a social
media post, stating:
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal
Asim Munir… I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of
two weeks… This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE… We received a 10 point
proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”
Trump emphasized that U.S. military objectives had already
been achieved and that negotiations were “very far along” toward a long-term
peace agreement in the Middle East.
The development represents a rare moment of alignment
between military restraint and diplomatic engagement, with Pakistan emerging as
a key intermediary.
However, the success of the ceasefire will depend on
sustained cooperation, clarity on disputed issues, and whether both sides can
translate temporary de-escalation into a lasting agreement.
