March 30, 2026 (MLN): U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington is weighing the possibility of taking control of Iran’s oil resources, including the key export hub of Kharg Island, amid escalating tensions in the region.

Speaking in an interview with Financial Times, Trump said his “favourite” option would be to take Iran’s oil, while acknowledging that such a move has drawn criticism within the United States, as reported by APP.

He suggested that seizing Kharg Island responsible for more than 90% of Iran’s oil exports remains one of several options under consideration.

“Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump said, without providing further details on a final decision.

The remarks came as Iran has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes daily.

The disruption has created significant volatility in global energy markets, with widespread economic repercussions.

Asian economies, heavily dependent on Middle Eastern oil, have been particularly affected, while the United States is also facing rising gasoline prices, now at their highest levels in years.

At the same time, concerns are growing in Washington over the risk of prolonged military engagement. Lawmakers from both political parties have warned about the possibility of a “forever war,” citing increasing pressure on U.S. forces and military resources.

The Pentagon has responded by deploying thousands of Marines and sailors toward the region in recent days, signaling a continued military buildup even as diplomatic channels remain open.

Despite the escalation, Trump expressed confidence that a deal with Iranian officials could be reached quickly. However, he declined to provide specifics on whether a ceasefire agreement or reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could happen in the near term.

The White House has not issued an immediate response to the interview. Meanwhile, U.S. military operations continue, with Trump indicating that thousands of targets remain under consideration as part of ongoing actions.
