South Punjab farmers advised on livestock heatwave precautions

July 13, 2026 (MLN): The Livestock Department has launched an awareness campaign to protect animals from the ongoing heatwave affecting South Punjab, advising farmers to adopt preventive measures to safeguard their livestock during the extreme temperatures.

The campaign has been titled "Heatwave Protection, Healthy Livestock and Prosperous Farmers."

Additional Director Livestock Dr Allah Bachaya said that, in line with directions from the Government of Punjab and Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ashraf, field staff of the department had initiated awareness activities and were visiting livestock farmers across the region to ensure precautionary measures were being observed during the extreme weather.

Under the campaign, farmers have been urged to ensure a constant supply of clean, cool drinking water for their animals, keep them in shaded areas, and avoid exposing them to direct sunlight between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

They have also been instructed to provide fresh, high-quality green fodder and to strictly avoid feeding spoiled or moldy feed, APP reported.

The advisory further recommended the use of electrolytes and mineral mixtures in consultation with veterinary doctors.

During periods of intense heat, farmers have been encouraged to lightly sprinkle water on animals or use fans to help reduce heat stress, with special attention advised for milking, pregnant, and weak animals.

Livestock owners have also been advised to immediately contact veterinary staff if their animals show symptoms such as rapid breathing, excessive panting, restlessness, or unconsciousness.
