October 01, 2025 (MLN): A comprehensive livestock vaccination and health campaign has been introduced in Thar under the Livestock Improvement Program.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Livestock & Fisheries Department, Government of Sindh, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam and Thar Foundation, aiming to improve livestock productivity and rural incomes.

The program is covering 23 villages across Thar Coal Block II and Gorano, focusing on farmer training, improved husbandry practices and mobile veterinary services.

Farmers have reported 15–20% income gains through healthier herds and higher milk yields.

So far, over 650 farmers have received training in livestock management, commercial practices and sustainability.

The sessions have also empowered women to take a more active role in household decision-making related to animal health.

Vaccination and deworming drives have reached nearly 22,000 and 37,000 animals, respectively.

This campaign builds on recent livestock initiatives, including a visit by a senior IUCN Pakistan delegation to Tharparkar earlier this week.

The delegation engaged with local government officials and Thar Foundation representatives to advance a grazing land management and conservation policy.

The initiative comes at a crucial time, as rising livestock numbers threaten to exceed the land’s natural capacity, putting pressure on pastures and animal health.

Since livestock rearing remains a major source of income for Thari communities, the program is also assessing rangeland conditions, promoting better grazing practices and equipping farmers with conservation knowledge.

The IUCN delegation comprising grazing land experts, foresters, and development professionals also met with the Forest Department’s Grazing Land Management Wing, as well as representatives from the Livestock and Wildlife Departments, and local farmers to discuss sustainable livestock practices.
