Senator Aurangzeb seeks Moody’s views on achieving stronger rating

October 15, 2026 (MLN): Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has sought Moody’s views on how Pakistan can earn a stronger sovereign rating, while telling the agency that the country is replacing costly short-term debt with longer-maturity financing without adding to the external debt stock.

The Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue met Moody’s representatives on the sidelines of the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, to discuss Pakistan’s economic outlook and sovereign credit profile, said a press release issued.

The talks covered the recent rating upgrade, improved fiscal and external indicators, and Pakistan’s renewed access to international capital markets.

The Pakistani delegation pointed to rising foreign exchange reserves, a contained current account deficit and lower State Bank forward liabilities.

Senator Aurangzeb reaffirmed the government’s commitment to structural reforms and to sustainable, export-led growth that extends beyond the IMF programme.

He also asked how the agency balances political risk against economic performance in its assessments.
