September 10, 2026 (MLN): The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI) are working together to introduce modern technology and improved seed varieties into the agricultural sector, with the government achieving a key policy-level milestone by clearing the way for genetically modified 'GM Maize' to be cultivated in Pakistan.

The Cabinet Committee granted in-principle approval for the cultivation of 'GM Maize' in the country, a decision expected to strengthen the agricultural sector's capacity to adopt modern seed varieties, achieve higher crop yields and build resilience against climate change.

The Chief Executive of SIFC's Green Pakistan Initiative attended the Cabinet Committee meeting alongside the Federal Finance Minister, said a press release issued.

'GM Maize' refers to a genetically modified seed variety developed through modern technology that offers greater resistance to pests, disease and adverse weather conditions.

Multinational companies such as Monsanto, Bayer, Cargill, Syngenta and Corteva have maintained a presence in Pakistan's seed industry since the 1980s.

A State Bank report noted that these companies have played a central role in driving agricultural innovation in the country through the introduction of hybrid seed technologies
