Rupee extends record rally to 190 sessions

July 06, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani Rupee added another session to its historic winning streak against the US Dollar, edging up by 0.77 paisa in Monday's interbank trading to close at PKR 278.15/USD, against Friday's finish of 278.16.

This marks the 190th consecutive session of appreciation for the local currency, extending its cumulative gain over the run to PKR 3.3119, or 1.19% one of the longest sustained rallies in the unit's trading history.

During the session, the rupee moved within a band of 278.10 to 278.30 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at 278.25 for buying and 279.15 for selling.

The rupee's gains against the dollar were not mirrored across the board, with the currency losing ground against several major peers. Against the Euro, the rupee shed 61.72 paisa, or 0.19%, closing at 317.54 compared to 316.92 previously.

It weakened further against the British Pound, falling 3.33 rupees or 0.90% to settle at 371.35 versus 368.02 a day earlier.

The Swiss Franc also gained on the rupee, which depreciated by 1.85 rupees or 0.54% to close at 345.47.

Against the Japanese Yen, the local currency slipped 1.09 paisa or 0.64% to finish at 1.7249, compared to 1.7140 previously.

Among regional and Gulf currencies, the rupee posted a mixed performance. It gained 0.66 paisa, or 0.02%, against the Chinese Yuan, closing at 40.99 from 41.00.

Against the Saudi Riyal, it eased 1.38 paisa to 74.08, while against the UAE Dirham it firmed marginally by 0.21 paisa, to close at 75.74.

On a fiscal year-to-date basis, the rupee has gained 0.77 paisa against the US Dollar. On a calendar year basis, the currency has strengthened by 1.97 rupees, or 0.71%, so far.

In the money market, the benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates (KIBOR) declined by 6 basis points each to 11.42% and 11.67%.
