Punjab has enough wheat, flour to meet demand: DFC

August 10, 2026 (MLN): Punjab has sufficient wheat and flour stocks to meet its domestic food requirements, with no shortage reported in markets across the province, District Food Controller (DFC) Attock Shams Abbas said.
He urged consumers not to panic-buy flour or form queues,
saying adequate supplies of quality flour were readily available in markets and
bazaars.
Shams Abbas dismissed reports of a wheat or flour shortage
as unfounded, stating that the current supply situation remained stable and
significantly different from shortages witnessed in previous years.
According to the DFC, Punjab produced around 21.9 million
metric tonnes of wheat during the current year against an estimated annual
requirement of approximately 16.5 million metric tonnes.
The production level represents a surplus of nearly 5.4
million metric tonnes, or around 33% above the province’s own requirement. The
additional stock could also help support food requirements in other provinces,
he added.
He said the Punjab government had procured around 500,000
metric tonnes of wheat under the Aggregator Model and Forward Contracting
mechanism at a minimum support price of Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms.
The prevailing market price of wheat is currently around
Rs4,700 per 40 kilograms, according to the DFC.
Shams Abbas also noted that Pakistan had imported wheat in
previous years whenever necessary to strengthen food security and maintain
stability in the domestic market.
He said the government’s current approach was focused on
protecting farmers, maintaining sufficient flour supplies for consumers at
affordable prices and ensuring food security nationwide.
The DFC reiterated that there was no need for consumers to
purchase flour beyond their normal requirements, as supplies remained adequate
across Punjab.
