January 12, 2026 (MLN):  The government has unveiled an ambitious long-term plan to develop a climate-resilient Port Industrial Complex at Port Qasim, aimed at transforming the port into a globally competitive industrial and logistics hub while ensuring strict environmental compliance.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, while chairing a meeting on Monday, outlined the comprehensive master plan for Port Qasim, saying the integrated and phased development strategy aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals of trade expansion, industrialization and blue economy growth, according to a press release issued.

The minister said the climate-resilient industrial hub could generate tens of billions of dollars in economic activity over the next 20 years, significantly strengthening the country’s industrial base, boosting exports and creating hundreds of thousands of jobs.

He added that a strong focus on sustainability would help mitigate long-term environmental and economic risks, improving investor confidence.

Describing Port Qasim as a “gateway to national prosperity,” the minister stressed its strategic importance in Pakistan’s long-term economic growth framework.

He said the master plan covers more than 14,590 acres and is designed to ensure balanced industrial development, efficient port operations and sustainable land use over a 50-year horizon.

Under the plan, the Port Qasim Industrial Complex has been divided into three zones. The North Western Zone, spanning 3,061 acres, has been designated for diversified industrial activity, including value-added manufacturing and port-linked ancillary services.

The Eastern Zone, the largest at 7,273 acres, will serve as the primary industrial backbone, accommodating heavy industries, export-oriented units and logistics facilities.

The South Western Zone, covering 2,258 acres, has been allocated for specialised industrial and commercial uses, while an additional 1,997 acres of low-lying land will be developed in phases with environmental safeguards to ensure sustainable utilisation.

Highlighting the port’s existing capacity, the minister said Port Qasim currently hosts 833 operational units, with another 40 under construction, reflecting sustained investor interest and continued industrial expansion.

He noted that the government remains focused on improving ease of doing business, streamlining approvals and upgrading infrastructure to support future growth.

The minister further said Port Qasim plays a critical role in national supply chains, energy security and export growth, handling bulk cargo, liquid chemicals, energy imports and industrial raw materials vital to key sectors of the economy.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to modernising port infrastructure, strengthening road and rail connectivity, and integrating digital systems to enhance efficiency and transparency.

The objective, he said, is to position Port Qasim as a regional hub that meets international standards and contributes meaningfully to Pakistan’s economic transformation.
