Petroleum import bill clocks in at $1.5bn in June

July 16, 2026 (MLN): The petroleum group's import bill clock in at $1.55bn
in June 2026, marking an increase of 41.25% YoY compared to $1.10bn recorded in
June 2025, data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) showed.
On a monthly basis, however, the group's imports decreased by 9.98%
compared to $1.72bn in May 2026. Within the group, petroleum crude imports
stood at $812.03m and petroleum products at $506.86m, while liquefied natural
gas imports came in at $221.47m.
The food group's import bill declined by 7.08% YoY to $642.91m in June,
against $691.92m in June 2025, though it rose 17.07% MoM compared to $549.16m
in May 2026.
Palm oil imports stood at $214.54m, pulses at $63.58m, and tea at $49.41m
during the month.
The machinery group's imports increased by 17.51% YoY to $862.75m,
compared to $734.22m in the corresponding month last year, but fell 1.51% MoM
against $875.95m in May 2026.
Electrical machinery and apparatus led the group at $290.46m, followed by
other machinery at $244.27m and telecom equipment at $149.85m.
The transport group recorded the sharpest YoY growth among major
categories, with imports surging 76.31% to $435.05m compared to $246.78m in
June 2025, and rising 19.15% MoM against $365.11m in May 2026.
Road motor vehicles accounted for $353.16m of the group's total, while
aircraft, ships and boats imports jumped to $60.41m from $16.73m a year
earlier.
Imports of the textile group grew by 16.39% YoY to $538.90m, compared to
$463.06m in June 2025, and rose 23.68% MoM from $435.78m in May 2026.
Raw cotton imports stood at $216.41m, the largest sub-category within the
group.
The agriculture and other chemicals group posted imports of $848.81m, up
9.50% YoY from $775.18m and 8.11% MoM from $785.10m in May 2026.
Plastic materials contributed $245.77m to the group, while fertilizer
manufactured imports rose sharply to $46.59m from $86.26m a year ago.
The metal group's import bill climbed 41.98% YoY to $541.74m against
$381.63m in June 2025, and 34.99% MoM compared to $401.36m in May 2026, led by
iron and steel imports of $265.63m.
The miscellaneous group's imports rose 36.06% YoY to $101.60m from
$74.68m, and 5.26% MoM from $96.53m in May 2026.
Total import payments through banks stood at $6.05bn in June 2026,
against $4.87bn in June 2025, while freight charges were recorded at $196.54m
during the month.
