Pakistan’s total debt, liabilities rise to Rs100tr in FY26

August 11, 2026 (MLN):Pakistan's total debt and liabilities rose to Rs99.59tr in FY26, up 5.51% YoY from Rs94.39tr in FY25, data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) showed.
The breakup shows total debt stood at Rs97.88tr while total
liabilities stood at Rs3.42tr during the period under review.
The country's total debt comprised three components: gross
government domestic debt, PSEs' domestic debt, and external debt, amounting to
Rs59.44tr, Rs2.24tr, and Rs36.20tr respectively.
External debt which includes government external debt,
non-government external debt, the country's debt from the IMF, and intercompany
external debt from direct investors abroad jumped 3.14% YoY, up from
Rs35.10tr in FY25.
Within this, the country's debt from the IMF stood at
Rs3.07tr, expanding by 16.84% YoY from Rs2.63tr in FY25.
Total liabilities (external and domestic combined) fell
sharply, down 23.23% YoY to Rs3.42tr from Rs4.46tr in FY25, led by a decline in
external liabilities to Rs2.41tr from Rs3.39tr.
Total Debt and Liabilities Servicing
The servicing of total debt and liabilities eased to
Rs11.97tr in FY26, down 9.08% YoY from Rs13.16tr in FY25.
The largest share of servicing came from interest payments
on debt, which stood at Rs7.27tr in FY26, down 23.24% YoY from Rs9.47tr driven
mainly by lower interest payments on gross government domestic debt, which fell
to Rs5.99tr from Rs8.08tr.
Principal repayment of external debt and liabilities, by
contrast, rose to Rs4.47tr in FY26 from Rs3.47tr in FY25, while interest
payments on liabilities edged up to Rs235bn from Rs228bn.
Short-term principal servicing stood at Rs174bn in FY26, up
from Rs96bn in FY25, largely on account of government external debt repayments,
which rose to Rs164bn from Rs70bn.
