Pakistan’s power generation rises to 13,744 GWh in June 2025

July 21, 2025 (MLN): The total power generation in the country increased by 2% year-on-year (YoY) to 13,744 GWh during June 2025, as compared to 13,459 GWh in the same month of last year.

According to the monthly electricity generation data released by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the total power generation also increased by 8% month-on-month (MoM) compared to 12,755 GWh in May 2025.

June’s rise in power generation was primarily driven by stronger demand, supported by lower electricity tariffs and a shift from captive power usage to the national grid.

While some sources like nuclear and gas saw declines, the overall growth reflects healthy demand trends across multiple sectors.

On a cumulative basis, in FY25, electricity generation stood at 127,160 GWh, largely flat with no change compared to 127,165 GWh in FY24.

Production from Hydel and Local Coal rose by 14% and 1% YoY, respectively, while Nuclear, Gas, and Solar saw changes of -31%, -17%, and -10%, respectively.

RLNG witnessed a 9% decline YoY. Share-wise, Hydel led electricity generation during June 2025, contributing 39.4% of the total generation.

This was followed by RLNG at 16.1%, Local Coal at 11%, Nuclear at 10.1%, and Gas at 7%.

Cumulatively, Hydel remained the largest contributor in FY25, with a share of 31.4%, followed by Nuclear at 17.7%, RLNG at 17.5%, Local Coal at 12.2%, and Gas at 8.8%.
