July 13, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has completed its
marine bunkering footprint across all three commercial ports after carrying out
the country's first-ever marine bunkering operation at Gwadar Port.
This marks a fresh milestone in the development of its
maritime infrastructure.
The inaugural operation involved the supply of 2,500
metric tonnes of IMO-compliant Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) to the
UAE-owned LNG carrier LNG Enugu.
The fuel was refined by Cnergyico PK Limited, while
global energy trader Vitol executed the bunkering operation through its
specialised barge Marine Ista, in collaboration with the National Logistics
Corporation (NLC), said a press release issued.
With the Gwadar operation now complete, Pakistan is
positioned to offer internationally compliant marine bunkering services at
Karachi Port, Port Qasim and Gwadar Port, strengthening its standing as an
emerging marine fuel supply destination in the region.
Marine bunkering is described as a high-value port
service that generates additional revenue by supplying fuel to international
vessels.
The extension of bunkering services to Gwadar is
expected to enhance the port's commercial attractiveness and open new business
avenues for Pakistan's shipping, logistics and downstream energy sectors.
Gwadar's proximity to key international shipping routes
was cited as a strategic advantage, positioning it to serve vessels operating
through the Arabian Sea and offering an additional bunkering option as shipping
companies diversify their trading routes amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Usama Qureshi, Vice Chairman of Cnergyico PK Limited,
termed the Gwadar operation the completion of Pakistan's bunkering network
across its three major commercial ports.
He credited Vitol and its team for playing what he
called an extraordinary role in making the milestone a reality for Pakistan,
and congratulated all those whose dedication and collaboration contributed to
its success.
He further noted that the development was an important
step towards strengthening Pakistan's maritime services and providing
international vessels with access to a reliable marine fuel supply network,
powered by Cnergyico's fuels.
Usama Qureshi also acknowledged the support extended by
the Government of Pakistan, the Prime Minister's Maritime Task Force, the
Ministry of Maritime Affairs, the Federal Board of Revenue, the Gwadar Port
Authority and NLC in facilitating the landmark operation.
The companies said the launch of marine bunkering at
Gwadar is expected to diversify the port's commercial offerings, attract
additional vessel traffic and support Pakistan's ambition to develop Gwadar
into a competitive regional maritime gateway.
