Pakistan’s ceasefire push triggers $trillion market reaction

April 10, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan was thrust into the center of global
diplomacy on April 7 after a rapid last-minute intervention helped shift
expectations from near-certain escalation to a ceasefire agreement.
Markets had earlier assigned less than a 5% probability to a
ceasefire amid escalating tensions and a stark warning attributed to Donald
Trump suggesting severe consequences if the situation worsened.
However, a late diplomatic push led by Pakistan’s leadership
under Shehbaz Sharif became central to efforts that ultimately helped unlock a
breakthrough.
By the afternoon, sentiment had flipped sharply as
back-channel negotiations accelerated across multiple capitals. The resulting
agreement was widely seen as reflecting Pakistan’s facilitative role in easing
communication and enabling the conditions for a ceasefire.
Economist Atif Mian on his X handle highlighted the
extraordinary scale of the market response, pointing to a rapid 2.9% rally in
the S&P 500 following the announcement.
He noted that, when applied across roughly $125 trillion in
global financial markets, the move represents trillions of dollars in value illustrating
the enormous economic cost of geopolitical risk and the gains from
de-escalation.
The shift was described as one of the fastest “risk
repricing” events in recent memory, as markets moved within hours from pricing
in conflict to full ceasefire confidence.
Beyond financial markets, the episode has been viewed as a
potential milestone in Pakistan’s diplomatic standing, reinforcing perceptions
of its role as a constructive intermediary in moments of international crisis.
