Pakistan’s energy future lies in solar, low-cost resources

April 7, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan must adopt a long-term energy strategy focused on local resources and renewable energy to ensure both energy security and economic stability.

Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif highlighted this while emphasizing that moving toward solar and other low-cost energy sources is essential for sustainable growth.

He also acknowledged that capacity payments to power producers remain a heavy financial burden on the government, according to APP.

Pakistan’s energy direction came under discussion in the National Assembly during a calling attention notice regarding proposed changes to the net metering policy for solar users and a plan to impose an 18% tax on solar panels. 

Responding to lawmakers, Khawaja Asif noted that existing agreements in the power sector restrict the government’s ability to implement rapid structural reforms. 

He added that while some renegotiation efforts have been made, the relief achieved so far is limited compared to the scale of financial obligations. 

Despite these constraints, he reaffirmed that the government will continue exploring ways to cut costs and gradually transition toward more affordable and sustainable energy solutions
