January 14, 2026 (MLN): The Government is preparing to turn Ziarat Hasan Shah Island, located near Karachi’s Eastern Zone, into a flagship destination for eco-tourism, sports tourism and lifestyle retreats, a move aimed at unlocking coastal potential while safeguarding the environment.

The plan was shared by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who said the island has been declared a priority investment project with an estimated cost of Rs1–1.5bn ($3.6–5.3m), according to a press release issued.

Chairing a meeting on the initiative, the minister said the development is expected to generate 1,000 to 1,500 direct and indirect jobs during construction, followed by 1,200 to 1,800 long-term jobs once the project becomes operational, providing a major boost to local livelihoods and coastal economies.

Stretching about four kilometres in length and 100 to 500 metres in width, Ziarat Hasan Shah Island features a sandy southeastern beach that offers strong potential for hospitality, recreation and leisure activities.

The island’s natural landscape positions it well to meet Pakistan’s growing demand for coastal tourism.

A key advantage of the project is the island’s land accessibility, allowing a direct road link to Karachi’s existing road network.

This, the minister noted, would significantly reduce infrastructure costs, accelerate development timelines and encourage participation from local businesses and workers.

The project will be developed under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) or Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, with the government inviting private investors experienced in tourism, hospitality and leisure development.

“Our objective is to attract credible partners while safeguarding public interest and ensuring sustainable returns,” the minister said.

With over 1,000 kilometres of coastline, much of it underutilised, Pakistan is increasingly looking to the maritime sector to drive economic growth.

It was also stressed that environmental safeguards and climate-conscious planning will remain central to the island’s development, given the sensitivity of coastal ecosystems.

“Tourism must go hand in hand with responsibility,” the minister said, adding that the project aligns with Pakistan’s broader push to strengthen its blue economy through port-led growth, tourism expansion and long-term investment.
