March 10, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has taken a
significant step in its digital transformation with the successful NGMS/5G
Spectrum Auction, conducted by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA),
aimed at enhancing connectivity and strengthening the country’s digital economy.
The auction is expected to accelerate the rollout of
advanced digital services, support emerging technologies like artificial
intelligence and blockchain, and create new economic and employment
opportunities.
Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad
Aurangzeb, who chaired the Spectrum Committee overseeing the auction, addressed
participants at the ceremony held in a local hotel, according to a press
release issued.
He praised the collaborative efforts over the past year and
a half to finalize a framework that balances revenue optimization with
fostering an enabling digital ecosystem.
Senator Aurangzeb acknowledged that the process had been
initiated under the leadership of the Minister for Information Technology
during her 2021 tenure and highlighted the importance of policy continuity
across successive governments.
The Finance Minister emphasized that improved digital
infrastructure is key to broader economic and social progress, supporting
sectors such as IT and IT-enabled services, boosting exports, and creating
jobs.
He also highlighted ongoing initiatives including support
for freelancers, the Prime Minister’s Digital Pakistan vision, expansion of
digital infrastructure, development of payment systems, and the digitization of
government services.
He noted that enhanced spectrum availability and 5G rollout
would help Pakistan navigate crises, enabling online education, remote work,
and other essential digital services.
Senator Aurangzeb concluded by thanking the Spectrum
Committee and all stakeholders for their contributions, expressing confidence
that the auction will pave the way for greater innovation, connectivity, and
economic opportunities nationwide.
