Pakistan to incentivize local battery energy storage production

August 05, 2026 (MLN): The government is
finalizing a fresh policy framework aimed at promoting indigenous manufacturing
of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Pakistan, offering incentives to
local producers and reducing reliance on imported solutions as the country
accelerates its clean energy transition.
Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari
stated this while addressing the Solar Storage Flexibility 2026 Conference in
Islamabad, adding that the policy is being developed by the Ministry of
Industries and Production and will soon be finalized, said a press release
issued.
The Minister said Pakistan intends to build domestic
expertise in the design and integration of battery energy storage systems,
rather than depending solely on imported technology.
He stressed that universities have a critical role to
play in producing skilled human resources capable of servicing, maintaining,
and eventually manufacturing battery systems within the country.
Highlighting the progress made in the power sector,
Sardar Awais Leghari noted that nearly 55% of Pakistan's electricity
generation is currently sourced from clean energy.
He said the government has set an ambitious target of
raising the share of clean energy in the overall mix to 90% by 2035.
