Pakistan takes chairmanship of borrowers’ platform at World Bank-IMF meetings

October 12, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has assumed the chairmanship of the Governing Council of the Borrowers’ Platform, with Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb accepting the role on the country’s behalf during the World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Muhammad Aurangzeb highlighted the Platform’s role in
fostering knowledge-sharing and technical cooperation among member countries,
clarifying that it would not function as a collective bargaining forum or a
crisis-management mechanism.
Outlining Pakistan’s priorities for the 2026–27 work plan,
he emphasized improving debt-management practices, exchanging experiences in
economic reforms and exploring innovative instruments for development
financing.
The Finance Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to
translating the Platform’s objectives into practical measures and measurable
outcomes, stressing that debt should serve as a tool for development rather
than become an obstacle to it.
He also appreciated Egypt’s leadership and acknowledged the
contributions of member countries and the Secretariat in making the Platform
operational.
In his concluding remarks, Aurangzeb welcomed progress in establishing the Platform’s institutional structure, governance framework and joint work programme, along with increasing interest from prospective members. He also addressed a press conference following the session.
