Pakistan seeks World Bank support on social protection, reform agenda

April 14, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held talks with Anna Bjerde in Washington as part of engagements at the World Bank–IMF Spring Meetings, focusing on economic reforms and measures to shield vulnerable populations from external shocks.

During the meeting at the World Bank Group, Aurangzeb acknowledged the lender’s continued support for Pakistan’s reform and development agenda.

Discussions centered on the country’s economic outlook, including the spillover effects of the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Both sides underscored the need to strengthen social protection frameworks to mitigate the impact of global uncertainties on low-income segments, signaling a shared priority as Pakistan navigates external pressures.

Progress under the Country Partnership Framework (CPF) was also reviewed.

While noting advances across key areas, the two sides emphasized the importance of sustained policy efforts to meet long-term development targets.

Aurangzeb highlighted demographic challenges as a critical policy focus and called for World Bank support in formulating a comprehensive national master plan, stressing the need for coordinated action between federal and provincial governments.
