Pakistan reaffirms peace, mediation role during Iranian minister's visit

July 22, 2026 (MLN): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir held separate meetings with Iran's Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni on Tuesday, reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to regional peace, security and stronger bilateral cooperation.
During his meeting with the prime minister at the Prime
Minister House, Shehbaz Sharif stressed that Pakistan would continue to play
the role of an honest and sincere mediator and facilitator while remaining
firmly committed to regional peace and stability.
He also expressed concern over the recent escalation in the
Gulf region and urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that
could further destabilize the region.
The prime minister welcomed the visiting Iranian delegation
and recalled his recent visit to Tehran to attend the funeral ceremony of the
late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei.
He conveyed his good wishes to Supreme Leader Sayyid Mojtaba
Hosseini Khamenei and President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, according to APP.
Eskandar Momeni thanked the prime minister for the warm
reception and conveyed greetings from the Iranian leadership. He said his
delegation's visit was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the
two countries.
The Iranian interior minister also appreciated the mediation
efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, which led to the Islamabad Memorandum of
Understanding.
He also thanked the prime minister for attending the funeral
ceremony of the late Iranian Supreme Leader in Tehran.
Separately, Eskandar Momeni called on Field Marshal Syed
Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ), where both sides discussed
matters of mutual interest, regional and bilateral security, and effective
border management.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad
Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Information Minister
Attaullah Tarar, Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Syed Tauqir Shah, Minister
of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and other senior government officials
attended the meeting at the Prime Minister House.
