Pakistan reaffirms 60% renewable energy target by 2030

January 12, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has showcased its rapid,
people-driven transition toward clean energy, underlining major gains in solar
power deployment, renewable electricity generation, and climate-resilient
development.
The country has emerged as one of the world’s
fastest-growing solar markets, reaching 12 gigawatts of off-grid solar capacity
and more than 6 gigawatts of net-metered solar by the end of 2025.
In a historic milestone, renewables accounted for 53% of
total electricity generation in the last fiscal year, while initiatives such as
the Punjab Solar Panel Scheme 2026 are helping address energy poverty by
providing free or subsidized solar systems to low-income households.
Speaking at the 16th International Renewable Energy
Agency (IRENA) Assembly, Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, MNA, Coordinator to
the Prime Minister on Climate Change, delivered Pakistan’s national
statement and reaffirmed the country’s target of achieving 60% renewables in
the power mix by 2030, according to a press release issued.
She highlighted how distributed solar kits have restored
electricity and livelihoods in flood-affected communities, presenting the
initiative as a replicable model for climate-resilient recovery.
In her call to action, she urged IRENA and its Member States
to increase concessional financing for developing countries, treat technologies
such as energy storage and green hydrogen as global public goods, and
strengthen regional cooperation for shared energy security.
She further reiterated Pakistan’s continued commitment to the Paris Agreement and its expectation of sustained technical and financial support from IRENA to help build a resilient, inclusive, and low-carbon future.
