August 29, 2026 (MLN): The Ministry of Finance has early-repaid
Rs1,200bn to the State Bank of Pakistan well ahead of its scheduled maturity, which
marks the single largest early-repayment tranche undertaken so far and taking
cumulative domestic debt retired ahead of maturity to over Rs5.92tr.
The development was shared by Khurram Schehzad on his X
account, noting that the August 2026 tranche surpassed the previous high of
Rs1,133bn recorded in August 2025.
The early debt repayment journey has picked up pace over
the past two years, with Rs826bn retired in October 2024, followed by Rs200bn
in November 2024, Rs273bn in March 2025, Rs500bn in June 2025, and Rs1,133bn in
August 2025.
The pace continued into FY26, with Rs122bn repaid in November 2025, Rs494bn in December 2025, Rs300bn in January 2026, Rs595bn in April 2026, and Rs279bn in May 2026, before the latest Rs1,200bn tranche in August 2026.

On a cumulative basis, Rs1.8tr was retired early in
FY25, rising to Rs2.9tr in FY26 up 62%
with another Rs1.2tr already retired in FY27.
The momentum reflects a fundamental shift towards active
sovereign liability management, with the government using improved fiscal space
to retire obligations early, reduce refinancing and rollover risks, lower
future debt-servicing pressures and strengthen the public debt profile.
The strategy was aimed at lowering refinancing risk, easing future debt-servicing pressure, and building stronger public finances, creating more fiscal space for Pakistan's economy.
