October 20, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan is taking steps to resolve the challenges hindering its meat exports to Malaysia, as stakeholders gathered in Lahore to discuss ways to enhance the sector’s efficiency and global competitiveness.

The committee meeting was chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan and attended by Ministry of Industries and Production (MoIP) Secretary Saif Anjum, along with representatives from the public and private sectors, as reported by APP.

Exporters highlighted key issues including poor feed quality, limited livestock breeds, high production costs, lack of cold chain facilities, insufficient banking support, and complex documentation procedures.

They said the banking sector’s reluctance to facilitate payments forces them to rely on cash transactions in cattle markets, while the absence of cold storage at airports compels them to store meat in vehicles.

Participants pointed out that India exports meat at $3.5 per kg, while Pakistan’s cost stands at $5 per kg, the same rate applied to exports to Tajikistan.

Haroon Akhtar Khan acknowledged the exporters’ concerns, stating that Pakistani meat is of superior quality and capable of competing globally.

He assured that, under the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government is committed to expanding meat exports to new international markets and providing maximum facilitation to the industry.
