November 14, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan has approved the
launch of a passenger and cargo ferry service with Oman, a major step aimed
at boosting maritime connectivity, trade, and tourism between the two
countries.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid
Anwar Chaudhry shared the development, confirming that Pakistan and Oman
will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize the ferry link., said
a press release issued.
An Omanese delegation is expected to visit Pakistan soon to
finalize arrangements. The initiative follows July 2025 meeting between
Chaudhry and Oman’s Ambassador Fahad bin Sulaiman bin Khalaf Al Kharusi,
where both sides explored ways to deepen economic and maritime cooperation.
Chaudhry emphasized the strategic significance of
establishing a direct Gwadar–Oman route, predicting substantial economic gains
through expanded trade, investment inflows, and transit revenue.
Gwadar’s annual export revenue is forecast to exceed $850m,
driven mainly by value-added fisheries and the date sector. The new corridor
also provides Oman and other regional partners an efficient maritime gateway to
Central Asian markets.
In 2024, Pakistan’s exports to Oman totaled $224m,
and officials expect the new ferry service supported by upgraded port
facilities to significantly increase bilateral trade.
Designed to carry both passengers and cargo, the route will
offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional
air and sea transport, improving logistics for trade, tourism, and supply-chain
operations.
Pakistan has also issued its first-ever international ferry
license, enabling regulated operations between Pakistan and GCC countries
including Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, and Iran.
This regulatory milestone is expected to encourage
private-sector participation and strengthen regional maritime links.
Chaudhry highlighted the potential benefits for the large
Pakistani diaspora in Oman, estimated at 250,000 to 320,000 residents or
up to 360,000 depending on classifications who will gain easier travel and
stronger personal and business connections.
The Pakistan–Oman tourism corridor is viewed as a promising
growth avenue due to cultural ties, scenic coastal landscapes, and short
maritime distances.
The ferry service is expected to support hospitality,
transportation, and leisure sectors on both sides.
This initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader maritime
strategy to position Gwadar as a regional economic hub and deepen long-term,
mutually beneficial cooperation with Oman.
