Govt targets livestock overhaul to increase exports

April 8, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan aims to transform its livestock and dairy sector into a globally competitive industry by developing modern farms, promoting scientific breeding, and enhancing export-oriented production.

Officials highlighted the sector’s untapped potential for growth, employment, and international trade, stressing the need for a structured regulatory framework and provincial collaboration to achieve meaningful reforms, according to a press release issued.

This came during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, with Punjab Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Shah Kirmani.

The ministers discussed coordinated strategies for large-scale livestock development, herd transformation, disease-free zones, and initiatives such as Punjab’s livestock card program that provides farmers with interest-free financial support, animal tagging, and vaccination.

Both leaders emphasized aligning federal and provincial policies to ensure a sustainable, export-driven, and modern livestock sector.
