Pakistan backs $500m MIGA Trade Facility

April 14, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has welcomed a proposed short-term trade finance facility of up to $500 million from the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, as it moves to strengthen external financing buffers and support critical imports.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held discussions with MIGA Managing Director Tsutomu Yamamoto on the sidelines of the World Bank–IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, where he stressed the urgency of operationalizing the facility.

The proposed financing is aimed at supporting essential imports, including food, fertilizer, energy, and key industrial machinery, with Muhammad Aurangzeb calling for swift progress to meet Pakistan’s near-term external financing needs.

The minister also acknowledged ongoing arbitration cases involving financial implications, expressing confidence that MIGA’s facilitative role could help support amicable resolutions while preserving investor confidence.

He reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to maintaining macroeconomic stability and strengthening the investment climate.

This move signals continued collaboration with multilateral partners to support external sector resilience.
