Pakistan assumes SCO Chairmanship for 2027

September 01, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has formally assumed the Chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for the coming year, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stating that the country's tenure will be guided by the theme "Turning Vision into Action: Connectivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity."

The Prime Minister made the remarks in a post on social media platform X after addressing the SCO Council of Heads of State Meeting in Bishkek, where he also congratulated the Kyrgyz Republic on successfully hosting the Summit and steering the Organization with distinction over its term.

Shehbaz Sharif noted that, guided by the Shanghai Spirit, the SCO has evolved over the past 25 years into a vital platform for regional cooperation.

He further told the SCO family that water is the lifeblood of the region and must never be weaponised, adding that treaties governing shared waters must be honoured in both letter and spirit.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the SCO would continue to grow from strength to strength and deliver meaningful improvements to the lives of its more than three billion people.
