Pakistan, US fuel talks on energy imports, trade framework

October 14, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and US have discussed progress towards a trade framework agreement, energy diversification through higher imports from the US, cooperation on critical minerals and investment financing, as the two sides reviewed bilateral economic cooperation.

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb met Ambassador Yon of the US State Department on the sidelines of the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, said a press release issued.

The finance minister reviewed headway on the trade framework agreement and on diversifying energy supplies through increased imports from the US.

He also outlined the steps being taken to maintain fuel supplies and protect vulnerable consumers.

Talks also covered anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) arrangements, Financial Action Task Force (FATF) follow-up, and investment financing through the US Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and EXIM Bank.

The finance minister highlighted the Reko Diq project, cooperation on critical minerals, project security and opportunities to mobilise private investment.

The two sides also discussed the acquisition and financing of Boeing aircraft, aviation clearances, digital asset regulation, and possible applications of remittances and Eurobond tokenization.
