Pakistan, Tajikistan vow to boost trade, energy ties

September 03, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan and Tajikistan reaffirmed their readiness to expand trade and energy linkages, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underlining the role of regional connectivity projects in driving prosperity across South and Central Asia.
The commitment was made during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan in Beijing, where both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, energy, regional security, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the current pace of bilateral cooperation and emphasized their shared cultural, historical, and religious ties as the foundation of stronger relations.
They also stressed the importance of people-to-people contacts to foster deeper understanding, as per thr press release issued.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s willingness to boost trade and energy partnerships, while President Rahmon welcomed Islamabad’s commitment and noted that closer collaboration would benefit both nations.
Discussions also included perspectives on regional and global issues, with both sides underscoring the importance of coordinated approaches for peace, stability, and development.
The Tajik meeting was part of Shehbaz Sharif’s broader diplomatic engagements in Beijing, where the Prime Minister is also preparing for a high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
That upcoming discussion is expected to cover trade, energy, and regional security cooperation, reflecting Pakistan’s outreach toward Central Asia and Russia.
During his China visit, Shehbaz will additionally meet Premier Li Qiang, interact with Chinese business leaders, and attend a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the World’s Anti-Fascist War.
By holding a series of high-level meetings, Shehbaz Sharif is signalling Pakistan’s intent to pursue stronger economic, political, and security ties across the region, with the Tajik and upcoming Russian engagements underscoring Islamabad’s evolving regional diplomacy.
