March 04, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and Tajikistan have agreed to fast-track initiatives aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and enhancing bilateral trade, including a proposal to establish a direct land corridor linking the two countries through Gilgit.
The agreement emerged during a high-level meeting between
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan and Tajikistan’s
Ambassador to Pakistan Sharifzoda Yusuf Toir in Islamabad, according to the
press release.
During the discussion, both sides highlighted the
importance of adapting to shifting regional dynamics through strategic
cooperation.
A key proposal presented was the creation of a direct
trade corridor from Pakistan to Tajikistan via Gilgit.
In addition, the Tajik Ambassador suggested Pakistan
consider offering special concessional tariffs to Central Asian nations to
expand bilateral trade volumes.
Addressing security concerns in the region, Minister
Abdul Aleem Khan strongly condemned cross-border terrorism originating from
Afghanistan, describing it as a threat to regional peace and stability.
He stated that Afghanistan’s proxy role for India has
hindered not only Pakistan but also the broader Central Asian region.
The Minister emphasized that sustainable growth in
international trade depends on improved communication and transport
infrastructure, adding that strengthening trade with Central Asian states is
vital for Pakistan’s economic stability.
Ambassador Sharifzoda Yusuf Toir emphasized the interest
of Tajikistan’s 15m citizens in fostering closer ties with Pakistan’s 250m
people.
He noted that the development of new trade routes would
unlock unprecedented economic opportunities and prosperity across the region.
The Ambassador extended a formal invitation to Minister
Abdul Aleem Khan to visit Tajikistan, which was accepted.
The visit is expected to provide practical momentum to
the proposed cooperation initiatives.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to
modernize trade routes, enhance bilateral relations, and promote sustainable
regional development.
Both leaders emphasized that improved connectivity between Pakistan and Tajikistan will create shared economic benefits and strengthen regional prosperity.
