Pakistan, Russia deepen security cooperation

July 09, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and Russia have agreed to deepen cooperation on security matters and move forward with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their interior ministries during a meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations in New York.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Alexandrovich Kolokoltsev at the UN Headquarters, where both sides reviewed bilateral ties and discussed ways to expand collaboration on regional security challenges.

The two ministers exchanged views on the regional situation and explored enhanced cooperation in counterterrorism, counter-narcotics, cybercrime prevention, and joint police training, according to APP.

They also discussed developing a coordinated approach to counter terrorist networks operating in the region, with particular focus on Afghanistan.

The meeting also reviewed progress on decisions taken during their previous discussions, while both countries agreed to formalize broader cooperation through the signing of an MoU between their interior ministries.

Naqvi also extended an invitation to the Russian interior minister to visit Pakistan, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to strengthening engagement with Moscow.

During the meeting, Naqvi noted that more than 25 terrorist organizations are currently active in Afghanistan and stressed that eliminating extremist groups is a shared responsibility of the international community.

He emphasized the need for coordinated regional and global efforts, calling for effective joint measures to combat terrorism and eliminate the threat posed by militant networks.
