October 20, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan Post is facing an annual loss of around Rs12bn, which could climb to Rs18-19bn if pension expenses are included, with the government preparing a policy to cut the department’s costs that could involve reducing its workforce or privatising the service.

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan told the Senate on Tuesday, in reply to a question by Senator Shahadat Awan, that a detailed plan would be presented to the House later, APP reported.

He said Pakistan Post operates 9,707 units across the country, comprising 2,887 departmental post offices, 6,735 extra-departmental offices and 85 formations.

A province-wise breakdown listed a staff strength of 15,051, while the minister said the department currently has around 22,000 employees.

Aleem Khan said staff expenses account for a large share of the department’s costs. He added that recruitment and staffing follow provincial quotas, with shares distributed among the provinces according to the prescribed criteria.
