Pakistan, EU reaffirm commitment to deepen strategic partnership

September 24, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif stressing the importance of fully implementing the Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan.
The emphasizing was reached during Prime Minister Shehbaz
Sharif’s engagement with European Council President António Luís Santos da
Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines
of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The discussions covered the broad spectrum of Pakistan-EU
relations, with both sides expressing satisfaction over the growing pace of
high-level contacts and engagement between Pakistan and the European Union.
The Prime Minister emphasised the need for sustained
leadership-level interaction to provide further direction and momentum to
bilateral relations.
He also highlighted the importance of the EU’s GSP Plus
framework for Pakistan’s economic development, employment generation and trade,
while reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to continued engagement with the
European Union under the framework.
The leaders also discussed regional and international
developments and stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, respect for
international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his invitation to
the Presidents of the European Council and European Commission to visit
Pakistan, expressing his desire to work closely with the EU leadership to
further expand the mutually beneficial partnership.
