PM reviews progress on cashless economy plans

July 03, 2025 (MLN): The importance of digital transaction systems in ensuring economic transparency was emphasized by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a weekly review meeting on the cashless and digital economy held in Islamabad.

During the meeting, he stressed the urgent need to simplify transactions between citizens and businesses and to enhance public awareness about digital payment systems.

He instructed that the committees formed for promoting a cashless economy must work closely with all stakeholders and deliver actionable proposals.

The participants were informed that the State Bank of Pakistan is developing a strategy aimed at streamlining digital payment options for traders to boost adoption.

A simplified package will also be introduced to encourage small businesses to shift toward digital platforms.

Targets include increasing mobile application users for digital payments from 95 million to 120m and raising the total volume of digital transactions from Rs7.5 billion to Rs12bn.

The Prime Minister directed that these targets be doubled, according to the press release issued today.

Additionally, efforts are underway to expand Wi-Fi internet access throughout Islamabad, focusing on hospitals, educational institutions, government offices, parks, and metro bus routes.
