PM pushes for speedy completion of Gilgit-Baltistan solar scheme

June 16, 2026 (MLN): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed relevant authorities to accelerate implementation of the 100 Megawatt Solar Power Project for Gilgit-Baltistan, directing that the initiative be brought to completion without delay.

Chairing a progress review meeting on the project, the Prime Minister said the federal government would cover all costs associated with the 100MW solar supply scheme, highlighting the centre's commitment to addressing the region's chronic energy shortfall.

He also called for impartial third-party validation across all phases of the project to ensure transparency and accountability in execution, according to a press release issued.

Officials briefed the meeting on the structure of the initiative, which is divided into two components.

An 18MW solar installation targeting government buildings across Gilgit and Diamer Divisions is scheduled for completion by December this year, while solarization of government facilities in Baltistan Division is set to wrap up by October.

The remaining 82MW is being directed toward household solarization, with work already underway in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas and Khaplu.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Power Minister Sardar Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Engineer Amir Muqam, and senior government officials.
