PKR shows steady uptick against USD

April 23, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) recorded a marginal appreciation of 0.94 paisa against the US dollar in Thursday’s interbank session, closing at PKR 278.86 per USD compared to the previous day’s closing of 278.87.

During the trading session, the local currency moved within a narrow range, touching an intraday high (bid) of 278.90 and a low (ask) of 278.85, showing subdued volatility in the foreign exchange market.

In the open currency market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at 279.00 for buying and 279.90 for selling, indicating a slightly wider spread compared to interbank levels.

Beyond the US dollar, the rupee also posted gains against key international currencies.

Against the euro, the PKR appreciated by 1.39 rupees or 0.42%, closing at 326.37 compared to the previous 327.76.

Similarly, the local currency strengthened against the British pound by 1.18 rupees (0.31%), settling at 376.11 versus the prior closing of 377.30.

The rupee also gained 2.11 rupees or 0.59% against the Swiss franc, ending the session at 355.44.

In Asian currencies, the rupee improved slightly against the Japanese yen, rising 0.32 paisa or 0.18% to close at 1.7469.

Against the Chinese yuan, it appreciated by 6.42 paisa or 0.16% to settle at 40.81.

In Gulf currencies, the PKR showed mixed movement edging up 0.64 paisa (0.01%) against the Saudi riyal to 74.35, while slipping marginally by 0.88 paisa (0.01%) against the UAE dirham to close at 75.93.

On a broader timeline, the Pakistani rupee has gained 4.90 rupees or 1.76% against the US dollar during the current fiscal year.

Meanwhile, on a calendar year basis, the currency has appreciated by 1.26 rupees or 0.45%, highlighting a gradual strengthening trend.

In the money market, benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates remained unchanged at 11.19% and 11.44%, respectively, indicating stability in short-term interest rate expectations.
