PKR registers modest gain versus USD

July 09, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee recorded a marginal gain against the US dollar in Thursday's interbank trading, closing at PKR 278.15 per dollar compared with the previous close of PKR 278.16.

During the session, the local currency touched an intraday high (bid) of PKR 278.10 and a low (ask) of PKR 278.05 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 278.25 for buying and PKR 279.10 for selling.

Against other major currencies, the rupee weakened by 61.72 paisa, or 0.19%, versus the Euro to settle at PKR 317.54, compared with PKR 316.92 in the previous session.

The local unit also lost PKR 3.33, or 0.90%, against the British Pound, ending at PKR 371.35 against the previous close of PKR 368.02.

Against the Swiss Franc, the rupee declined by PKR 1.85, or 0.54%, to close at PKR 345.47.

The rupee depreciated by 1.09 paisa, or 0.64%, against the Japanese Yen, ending the session at PKR 1.7249 compared with PKR 1.7140 a day earlier.

Meanwhile, the local currency gained 0.66 paisa, or 0.02%, against the Chinese Yuan to close at PKR 40.99 from PKR 41.00.

The rupee slipped by 1.38 paisa, or 0.02%, against the Saudi Riyal to PKR 74.08, while it edged up by 0.21 paisa against the UAE Dirham to settle at PKR 75.74.

Since the start of the current fiscal year, the rupee has strengthened by 0.77 paisa against the US dollar. On a calendar-year basis, it has appreciated by PKR 1.97, or 0.71%.

In the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates eased by 4 basis points to 11.34% and 11.59%, respectively.
