PKR posts marginal gain vs USD

March 18, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) recorded a marginal increase against the US dollar in Wednesday’s interbank session, appreciating by 1.41 paisa (0.01%) to settle at 279.26, compared to the previous close of 279.27.

During the day, the currency moved within a narrow range, touching an intraday high (bid) of 279.30 and a low (ask) of 279.25.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at 279.25 for buying and 280.30 for selling.

Against major international currencies, the rupee mostly weakened. It lost 94.73 paisa, or 0.30%, versus the euro to settle at 321.90, compared to 320.95 a day earlier. Against the British pound, it declined by 1.43 rupees, or 0.39%, closing at 372.96 versus 371.53 previously.

The local currency also depreciated against other currencies, falling 61.31 paisa, or 0.17%, against the Swiss franc to 355.07. Against the Japanese yen, it slipped 0.45 paisa, or 0.26%, to 1.7587 from 1.7542.

Similarly, the rupee weakened by 7.23 paisa, or 0.18%, against the Chinese yuan to close at 40.62 compared to 40.54.

However, it recorded modest gains against Gulf currencies, appreciating 4.74 paisa, or 0.06%, against the Saudi riyal to 74.37, and rising 0.38 paisa against the UAE dirham to close at 76.04.

On a broader scale, the rupee has appreciated by 4.51 rupees, or 1.61%, against the US dollar during the მიმდინარე fiscal year. It has also gained 86.40 paisa, or 0.31%, so far in the current calendar year.

Meanwhile, in the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates increased by 6 basis points to 11.16% and 11.41%, respectively.
