PKR posts marginal gain against USD

March 16, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee recorded a slight gain against the US dollar in Monday’s interbank trading session, strengthening by 1.14 paisa to close at PKR 279.30 per USD, compared with the previous close of PKR 279.31.

During the session, the local currency moved within a narrow range, touching an intraday high of PKR 279.45 and a low of PKR 279.30 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 278.80 for buying and PKR 280.35 for selling.

Against other major global currencies, the rupee also posted gains. It appreciated 92.07 paisa (0.29%) against the Euro, ending the session at PKR 319.55, compared with PKR 320.47 previously.

Similarly, the rupee strengthened by PKR 1.33 (0.36%) against the British Pound, closing at PKR 370.00, down from PKR 371.33 in the previous session.

The local currency also advanced 95.72 paisa (0.27%) against the Swiss Franc, settling at PKR 353.64.

However, the rupee weakened slightly against the Japanese Yen, slipping 0.15 paisa (0.09%) to PKR 1.7533, compared with PKR 1.7518 a day earlier.

Against the Chinese Yuan, the rupee improved 4.66 paisa (0.11%), closing at PKR 40.48 from PKR 40.52 previously.

Meanwhile, the local unit showed marginal appreciation against Gulf currencies. It edged up 0.30 paisa against both the Saudi Riyal and the UAE Dirham, settling at PKR 74.43 and PKR 76.03, respectively.

On a broader basis, the rupee has strengthened PKR 4.46 (1.60%) against the US dollar during the current fiscal year, while it has gained 82.16 paisa (0.29%) so far in the calendar year.

In the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates rose by 4 basis points, reaching 10.80% and 11.05%, respectively.
