PKR holds ground, extends dollar gains for 240 straight sessions

September 16, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) extended its appreciation streak against the US dollar to 240 consecutive sessions, with cumulative gains reaching PKR 4.1536 or 1.50%.

In Wednesday’s interbank session, the local currency strengthened by 3.08 paisa against the US dollar, settling at PKR 277.27 compared to the previous close of PKR 277.30.

The rupee traded within a narrow range during the session, recording an intraday high (bid) of 277.30 and a low (ask) of 277.25.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 277.50 for buying and PKR 278.30 for selling.

Against major currencies, the PKR weakened by 29.72 paisa or 0.09% against the Euro to close at PKR 320.12 from 319.83.

The local unit appreciated by 12.47 paisa or 0.03% against the British Pound, settling at PKR 373.53 versus 373.65 a day earlier.

Against the Swiss Franc, the PKR gained 47.28 paisa or 0.14% to close at PKR 338.78.

The rupee marginally weakened against the Japanese Yen, declining by 0.01 paisa to close at 1.7886 compared to 1.7885 previously.

Against the Chinese Yuan, the PKR depreciated by 3.45 paisa or 0.08% to settle at 41.34 from 41.31.

Meanwhile, the local currency appreciated by 0.42 paisa against the Saudi Riyal to close at 73.82, while it gained 0.94 paisa against the UAE Dirham to settle at 75.49.

During the current fiscal year, the PKR has strengthened by 89.00 paisa or 0.32% against the US dollar, while its gain stands at Rs2.85 or 1.03% so far in the current calendar year.

In the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates edged up by 1 basis point to 11.75% and 12.00%, respectively.
