PKR holds firm, closes flat against USD

March 19, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) posted a marginal gain of 0.69 paisa against the US dollar in Thursday’s interbank market, closing at PKR 279.25 per USD compared to the previous day’s level of 279.26.

During the session, the currency traded within a range of 279.50 (bid) and 279.25 (ask).

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 279.00 for buying and PKR 280.30 for selling.

Against major international currencies, the rupee showed a broad-based appreciation. It strengthened by 2.14 rupees, or 0.67%, versus the Euro to settle at 319.76, compared to 321.90 in the prior session.

Similarly, the local unit gained 2.76 rupees, or 0.74%, against the British Pound, closing at 370.20 versus 372.96 a day earlier.

The rupee also advanced 2.63 rupees, or 0.74%, against the Swiss franc to end at 352.44.

Against the Japanese Yen, the currency improved by 0.49 paisa, or 0.28%, to 1.7538 from 1.7587.

The PKR appreciated by 16.14 paisa, or 0.40%, against the Chinese Yuan, closing at 40.45 compared to 40.62 previously.

Against regional currencies, the rupee edged up by 0.68 paisa, or 0.01%, versus the Saudi Riyal to 74.36, while it slipped slightly by 0.02 paisa against the UAE Dirham to settle at 76.04.

On a broader scale, the rupee has strengthened by 4.51 rupees, or 1.62%, against the US dollar so far in the current fiscal year. On a calendar year basis, it has gained 87.09 paisa, or 0.31%.

In the money market, the benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates rose by 5 basis points to 11.21% and 11.46%, respectively.
