PKR hits 200 consecutive winning sessions vs USD

July 20, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) continued its upward trajectory against the US dollar on Monday, recording its 200th consecutive session of appreciation in the interbank market.

The local currency strengthened by 0.82 paisa, with the US dollar closing at PKR 277.95, compared to PKR 277.96 in the previous session.

Since the start of its appreciation streak, the rupee has gained PKR 3.4720, equivalent to 1.25% against the greenback.

During intraday trading, the dollar touched a high of PKR 278.00 and a low of PKR 277.95.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 278.25 for buying and PKR 279.00 for selling.

Among other major currencies, the rupee remained almost unchanged against the euro, closing at PKR 317.99.

However, the local currency lost ground against several other currencies. It weakened by 44.77 paisa (0.12%) against the British pound to settle at PKR 374.42, declined by 20.32 paisa (0.06%) against the Swiss franc to PKR 344.53, and slipped 5.75 paisa (0.14%) versus the Chinese yuan to PKR 41.07.

The rupee also eased against regional Gulf currencies, falling to PKR 74.02 per Saudi riyal and PKR 75.68 per UAE dirham.

In contrast, the local unit posted a marginal gain against the Japanese yen, improving by 0.01 paisa to PKR 1.7120.

So far in FY2026-27, the rupee has appreciated by 20.84 paisa (0.07%) against the US dollar. On a calendar-year basis, it has strengthened by PKR 2.17, representing a 0.78% gain.

Meanwhile, money market activity saw the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates (KIBOR) rise by 5 basis points, closing at 11.42% and 11.67%, respectively.
