PKR extends appreciation streak against USD to record 230 sessions

September 02, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) edged higher against the US dollar on Wednesday, extending its appreciation streak to 230 consecutive sessions.

The local currency closed at PKR 277.45 per US dollar, gaining 1.23 paisa from Tuesday’s settlement of PKR 277.46.

During the session, the rupee traded within a narrow range, with the intraday high bid recorded at PKR 277.50 and the low ask at PKR 277.45.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 278.00 for buying and PKR 278.50 for selling.

The rupee also strengthened against most major currencies.

Against the euro, PKR appreciated by 29.18 paisa, or 0.09%, to close at 321.32 compared with 321.61 a day earlier.

The local unit gained 65.49 paisa, or 0.17%, against the British pound, settling at 374.91 versus 375.56 in the previous session.

Against the Swiss franc, PKR advanced by Rs1.65, or 0.48%, to close at 340.64.

However, the rupee weakened against the Japanese yen, with its value declining by 0.27 paisa, or 0.16%, to 1.7371 from 1.7344.

Against the Saudi riyal, PKR gained 0.92 paisa to settle at 73.89, while it appreciated by 1.27 paisa, or 0.02%, against the UAE dirham to close at 75.54.

On a broader basis, the rupee has strengthened by 71.00 paisa, or 0.26%, against the US dollar during the current fiscal year.

Since the start of the calendar year, PKR has appreciated by Rs2.67, equivalent to 0.96%, against the greenback.

In the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer (KIBOR) rates rose by 1 basis point, with the bid rate reaching 11.59% and the offer rate standing at 11.84%.

The rupee’s 230-session appreciation streak has translated into cumulative gains of PKR 3.9736, or 1.43%, against the US dollar.
