PKR extends stability streak against USD

March 13, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee recorded a slight appreciation against the US dollar in Friday’s interbank trading, strengthening by 1.03 paisa to close at PKR 279.31 per USD, compared with the previous session’s closing level of PKR 279.32.

During the session, the currency moved within a narrow range, touching an intraday high (bid) of 279.45 and a low (ask) of 279.30.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 279.00 for buying and PKR 280.35 for selling.

Against other major international currencies, the rupee posted notable gains. The local unit appreciated by PKR 2.22, or 0.69%, versus the Euro to close at PKR 320.47 compared with PKR 322.69 in the previous session.

Similarly, the rupee strengthened against the British Pound by PKR 2.78, or 0.74%, settling at PKR 371.33 compared with the earlier closing of PKR 374.11.

The rupee also gained PKR 2.64, or 0.74%, against the Swiss Franc, ending the session at PKR 354.59.

Against the Japanese Yen, the local currency improved by 0.77 paisa, or 0.44%, to close at PKR 1.7518 compared with PKR 1.7595 a day earlier.

The rupee further appreciated against the Chinese Yuan by 11.32 paisa, or 0.28%, closing at PKR 40.52 compared with PKR 40.64 in the previous session.

Meanwhile, the rupee inched up against regional currencies as well, strengthening by 0.28 paisa against the Saudi Riyal to PKR 74.43, while gaining 1.94 paisa, or 0.03%, against the UAE Dirham to settle at PKR 76.04.

On a broader basis, the rupee has appreciated by PKR 4.45, or 1.59%, against the US dollar during the current fiscal year. On a calendar-year basis, the currency has strengthened by 81.02 paisa, representing a gain of 0.29%.

In the money market, the benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates edged higher by 5 basis points to 10.76% and 11.01%, respectively.
