PKR ends firmer against greenback

July 17, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee posted a marginal gain against the US dollar in the interbank market on Friday, appreciating by 1.20 paisa to close at PKR 277.96 per dollar, compared with the previous session's closing level of PKR 277.97.

During the trading session, the local currency touched an intraday high of PKR 277.95 and a low of PKR 278.00 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 278.80 for buying and PKR 279.05 for selling.

The rupee also advanced against most major international currencies. It strengthened by 69.48 paisa (0.22%) versus the euro to settle at PKR 317.99, compared with PKR 318.68 a day earlier.

Against the British pound, the local unit appreciated by Rs1.95 (0.52%), ending the session at PKR 373.97 from the previous close of PKR 375.92.

The rupee gained 20.69 paisa (0.06%) against the Swiss franc to close at PKR 344.33, while it improved by 0.27 paisa (0.16%) against the Japanese yen to PKR 1.7121.

Similarly, the domestic currency rose 5.60 paisa (0.14%) against the Chinese yuan, closing at PKR 41.01, compared with PKR 41.07 in the previous session.

Against regional currencies, the rupee edged up to PKR 74.02 per Saudi riyal and appreciated to PKR 75.68 per UAE dirham.

On a cumulative basis, the rupee has appreciated by 20.02 paisa (0.07%) against the US dollar during the current fiscal year, while its gain for the calendar year has reached Rs2.16 (0.78%).

Meanwhile, money market activity remained largely stable, with the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates easing by 2 basis points to 11.37% and 11.62%, respectively.
